Compliance

Sumitomo Light Metal is building systems for ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

Promotion of Compliance

Sumitomo Light Metal Group believes that "compliance with laws and ethics is the social responsibility of a business entity and the basis of its continued existence".

In January 2009, we made the "SLM Groupfs business ethical behavior handbook", a totally revised edition of the formerly distributed "Employee Behavior Standards". The new edition, which is with additional content such as the Group's Management Principles and policies on safety, healthcare and environment, is now being promoted in a campaign for full awareness among the Group's employees. Also, new employee orientation and education programs divided by level of responsibility are part of our intensified compliance training.

Internal Control Committee chaired by the president is responsible for the creation and operation of internal control systems to ensure accuracy of information contained in financial statements as required by the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act.

Internal Informant Contact

In January 2009, we provided each of the Group companies with an internal informant contact in order to detect early any act violating laws, company rules or behavioral standards. This system will help our compliance efforts and minimize the risk of misconduct that may jeopardize the companies. We also have an external informant place of contact where employees having misconduct-related information can personally confer with our corporate attorney.

The subject informed about or conferred on is treated properly after a thorough investigation and examination by the department in charge. Informants are guaranteed against any consequent adversity.

Protection of Personal Information and Information Security

Deeply understanding the importance of protection and management of personal and/or confidential information, the Group had been implementing its "Personal Information Protection Policies" for years before January 2009, when it made the gSLM Groupfs business ethical behavior handbookh to renew employees' awareness of the issue.

Additionally, we coordinated the relevant rules by newly providing the "Information Asset Management Rules" and the "Information Security Management Rules" in January 2009, in order to further enhance information security management and strengthen employees' awareness.
